Chokecherry

Prunus virginiana

cerisier de Virginie

Chokecherry (Prunus virginiana) is a small deciduous tree or large shrub prized for its attractive flowers, edible fruit, and vibrant fall colour. In spring, it produces elongated clusters of fragrant white flowers that attract pollinators. These are followed by dark red to black cherries that ripen in late summer and are a favourite of birds and mammals. Although the fruit is tart when raw, it can be used to make delicious jams, jellies, and wines. The foliage turns a striking yellow to orange-red in autumn, enhancing its ornamental appeal. Chokecherry thrives in a range of soil types and is often found in open woods, thickets, and along stream banks.

Associates: Try planting this species with American Plum (Prunus americana), Serviceberry (Amelanchier spp.), and Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis) in similar habitats.
