Sweet Everlasting (Pseudognaphalium obtusifolium)

Also known as: Rabbit Tobacco, Life Everlasting

Life Everlasting – A Plant of Endurance and Memory

In fields where the wind hums and the soil runs dry, Sweet Everlasting stands—silver leaves catching the sun, soft blooms holding their shape long after summer has passed. It’s a plant of resilience, thriving where others fade, offering nectar to pollinators. In herbal traditions, it’s been a breath of comfort; in gardens, it’s a quiet sentinel of beauty and persistence.

Description

Sweet Everlasting is a hardy native annual with soft, silvery foliage and clusters of small, pearly white flower heads. Its subtle fragrance and velvety texture make it a standout in dry, sunny landscapes. Known historically as “Life Everlasting” for its long-lasting dried flowers and enduring nature, this plant is equally valued for its cultural, medicinal, and ecological roles.

Ecological Benefits

  • Pollinator Support: Provides nectar and pollen for native bees, small butterflies, and beneficial insects late in the season.

  • Wildlife Value: Seeds provide food for small birds; foliage offers shelter for beneficial insects.

  • Soil Adaptability: Thrives in dry, sandy, or rocky soils, making it ideal for restoration projects and low-maintenance plantings.

Cultural & Historical Uses

  • Traditionally used in teas or smudge for respiratory health and relaxation.

  • Dried flowers are prized for long-lasting arrangements and natural crafts.

  • Associated in folklore with remembrance, healing, and resilience.

Growing Information

  • Light: Full sun to light shade

  • Soil: Well-drained; tolerates poor, sandy soils

  • Moisture: Low to moderate; drought-tolerant

  • Height: 30–60 cm (1–2 ft)

  • Bloom Period: Late summer to early fall

  • Lifespan: Annual (self-seeds readily in the right conditions)

Planting Tips

Sweet Everlasting does best in open, sunny spaces with minimal competition from taller plants. It is an excellent choice for meadow plantings, pollinator gardens, and naturalized areas. Allow seed heads to mature fully for self-seeding and winter wildlife value.
