American Bittersweet
Celastrus scandens
This woody vine, or twining shrub is in high demand by florists for its orange berries that appear in the fall and persist into the winter. Male & female plants are required for flowering, and the blooms are small and greenish. The berries are poisonous but the dried rootstock has been used medicinally as a treatment for skin cancer.
